Elect George Schmidt For Waterloo Region District School Board Trustee for Waterloo – Wilmot

As a trustee, I’ll be an ardent supporter of “back to basics” instruction. I think schools are at their best when they focus on core educational competencies. Conversely, I believe some areas outside of objective academic instruction should be left to parents.  This division of responsibilities ensures the academic success and emotional health of our children.

I’ve seen in the local media and I’ve heard personally from moms and dads that they have real concerns about the direction of the WRDSB. It would be my privilege to partner with parents and to present those concerns to the school board to ensure a fair, safe and secure school environment, and to “keep you in the loop” regarding board proposals and decisions.

You should know my desire to serve on the board comes from my long-time attachment to Waterloo Region. I was born and raised here; I made my life here. I’m a graduate of Eastwood Collegiate. I’m married to Barbara for over fifty years and together we have three children, numerous grandchildren and several great- grandchildren.

Running for the board is new for me but serving my community and dealing with the public isn’t. I served the public as a volunteer addiction counsellor, was in the automotive service industry and was involved in pastoral care in local church ministry. I am currently semi-retired and consequently have the time to give to serving you.

My many years of life experience have positioned me to relate effectively to the needs of children and their parents. “The public education system is failing our students’ academic and social/emotional needs due to overfilled classrooms, watered-down content, and less individualized student focus because the curriculum is the priority over student mastery.”

Teach any child from any socio-economic background how to read and comprehend what they read and you empower them to take control of their futures.

We need more than ever a school curriculum that engages students to succeed in our world.

Let’s get ‘Back to Basics’
Reading, Writing & Arithmetic

We want our children to learn how to read, write and do math. Provincial math scores have been declining for years. With remote learning during lockdowns, we hear that reading & writing competency has plummeted. The single biggest equalizer in history is literacy. Teach any child from any socio-economic background how to read and comprehend what they read, and we equip them for a successful future.

One of the most overlooked issues our government has failed on is parental rights in education. Never have I heard of so many school board meetings in the news. This is because parents are starting to lead the charge for their children’s education and to question the motives of the public education system. Rarely do we hear anything about literacy remediation or literacy in general. Instead, we’re hearing about gender fluidity and a curriculum built around ideologies & indoctrination. I am running as your school trustee to represent the children first and the rights of parents.
